Theogony ; Works and days Cover Image Book Book

Theogony ; Works and days / Hesiod. Elegies / Theognis. Translated and with introduction by Dorothea Wender. --

Hesiod. (Author). Hesiod. Works and days. (Added Author). Wender, Dorothea Schmidt. (Added Author). Theognis. Elegies. (Added Author).

Summary:

Together these two poets offer a superb introduction to the life and thought of archaic Greece. Theogony is a primitive creation of myth: it contains all the elements of a story but can also be read as philosophical speculation of a high order. In contrast, Works and days is an intriguing combination of agricultural advice, moral maxims, social and political comment and superstitious lore. Theognis, writing some two centuries later, ranges from serious theological questioning to satire and intensely personal love lyrics, and reflects the moods and themes of an aristocratic poet who mourned a changing Greek society.
