Python is an ubiquitous, open source, free scripting language. It is easy to learn and amazingly efficient, and its field of applications continues to grow as new packages and methods are released. This may be the first hands-on workbook for using Python for ArcGIS. It is organized as a series of tutorials of increasing complexity, each tackling a specific problem. Some initial knowledge of python scripting is required; this is not your introductory Python text (there are plenty of those). But pretty much everything related to geoprocessing receives a thorough treatment. Labeling and field calculations are the subject of the first chapter; the following section provides tutorials for developing stand-alone scripts, and covers several algorithms and a description of the relevant elements of Python syntax. ArcPy, a Python module developed for geoprocessing, is described after that. The final two chapters describe Python toolboxes and add-ins.Plenty of pseudo-code is included. Each tutorial begins with an overview of the relevant scenario and a description of the data and contains further sections detailing scripting techniques and tools. Data for the book is available for download from the publisher's site. Annotation ©2014 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
