Using a combination of dramatic reconstruction, photography, and Schama's narration, this program follows Jacques Louis David's career from his early ambitions as a Prix de Rome scholar to the actions that defined him, morally and artistically, during the reigns of Robespierre and Napoleon. Features the events and analysis surrounding the painting The Death of Marat, which transformed Jean-Paul Marat from bloodthirsty fanatic into Marat the pure and selfless. Looks his other works such as The Portrait of Monsieur Lavoisier and His Wife, The Oath of the Horatii, The Lictors Bring to Brutus the Bodies of His Sons, and a self-portrait painted in prison.
