Biographical or Historical Data: | The Provincial Police West Kootenay District included the communities of Nelson, Castlegar, Nakusp, Creston, Kaslo, New Denver, Salmo, Rossland, Trail and Ymir. (Source: telephone reference from the Legislative Library of British Columbia). Initiated as a colonial police force in 1858, The British Columbia Provincial Police existed from 1871 to 1950. Until 1924, the force had a constabulary organization. It was divided into 14 districts, each with a chief constable who reported to the provincial superintendent of police. In 1924, the organization became semi-military and hierarchical. The commissioner (formerly the superintendent) was reported to by five inspectors each of whom commanded a main division.
