(Source: telephone reference from the Legislative Library of British Columbia). Initiated as a colonial police force in 1858, The British Columbia Provincial Police existed from 1871 to 1950. Until 1924, the force had a constabulary organization. It was divided into 14 districts, each with a chief constable who reported to the provincial superintendent of police. In 1924, the organization became semi-military and hierarchical. The commissioner (formerly the superintendent) was reported to by five inspectors each of whom commanded a main division. Every division was composed of a number of districts. (Source: Cecil Clark, Tales of the British Columbia Provincial Police, Victoria: Morriss, 1971).
