Boreal fire ecologists recognize the relationship between fire and the environment, and the consequences of this relationship for man. Elders of northern Indian bands speak of traditional, controlled burning practices that, prior to being outlawed in the thirties, established safety and environmental sustenance in the heavily wooded north.
