The combination of a renowned publisher, a well-qualified editor, up-to-date entries, and reasonable price makes this a reference book worth adding to any collection. It shares many of the good qualities of Oxford Companion to Canadian Literature, ed. by Eugene Benson and William Toye (2nd ed., CH, Nov'98) and Concise Oxford Companion to Canadian Literature, ed. by Toye (CH, Feb'02), and adds the benefit of greater currency. New will be no stranger to students of Canadian literature, since he also edited numerous Canadian volumes in Gale's Dictionary of Literary Biography. In this encyclopedia, the signed entries, arranged alphabetically, include both cross-references and recommendations for further reading. Appendixes include a cultural chronology, an index by contributor, an index citing all references to each author (major authors are mentioned numerous times throughout the volume), and a supplementary index leading readers to names and concepts for which there is no separate entry--features not offered in the Oxford volumes. The typeface and page layout are pleasant to the eye, and the binding sound. A solid reference book. ^BSumming Up: Essential. All collections. Copyright 2003 American Library Association
