Summary: Voice of the Drum: Indigenous Education and Culture is a collection of 20 essays that were presented during an 11-day summer institute in 1998 at Brandon University. The papers are organized around theme areas such as worldview, curriculum change, governance and policies, and reflections from conference participants. Topics range from residential schools, Ojibwe traditional values and education, respecting Indigenous world views in Eurocentric education, technology and traditional values, culturally appropriate healing, post-secondary education research, Woodland Cree pedagogical model, strategies for cross-cultural education, programming for at-risk students, using plants in the classroom, Cross Lake Education Authority, Métis education, RCAP and education, self-government and education, and Indigenous education among the Maori of New Zealand. The book includes the reflections from an Ojibwe Elder and a poem written by an anonymous conference participant. This is an important collection of essays that reflect the wide-ranging issues surrounding Indigenous education and self-government.
