"Coming Canadians" : An introduction to a history of Canada's peoples

Summary: Canada is a nation of immigrants. Today, fully a third of the Canadian population is comprised of peoples other than the charter-member groups - the French and the British - and the Native peoples. These "other ethnic groups" have come to Canada from all parts of the world; some have come to escape political and military oppression, others to seek economic betterment. All came to Canada for a better life, though many, especially the visible and religious minorities, suffered discrimination and hardship. "Coming Canadians", written by series editors Jean Burnet and Howard Palmer, surveys the social history of immigration to and settlement in Canada, reveals the similarities of experience across the many ethnic groups who comprise of Canada's cultural mosaic, and examines the enormous part these people have played in many facets of Canadian life.
