Motivational interviewing for addictions

Carlson, Jon. (Added Author). Lewis, Judy. (Added Author). Miller, William R. (Added Author). Wyatt, Randall C. (Added Author). Seid, Erika L. (Added Author). Psychotherapy.net (Added Author).

Summary: Motivational interviewing helps people resolve their ambivalence about changing addictive behaviors. The therapist creates an atmosphere that is conducive to change by expressing empathy, helping clients explore the gaps between their current behaviors and the lives they would like to lead, avoiding argument, rolling with resistance, and using encouragement. In this tape, Dr. Miller works with a client who is considering the possibility of making changes in two areas: alcohol use and smoking. The video follows a three-part format; introduction of the model with Judy Lewis and Jon Carlson interviewing Dr. Miller, demonstration of an actual therapy session, and follow-up discussion.
