Summary: Picasso, self-indulgent artist, is shocked out of his apolitical stance by the Luftwaffe bombing of the Basque town of Guernica in his home country of Spain. Using a combination of dramatic reconstruction, photography, and Schama's narration, this program looks at Picasso's life and works, the influence of fellow countryman Francisco Goya's art on his work, and in particular the events surrounding his creation of the monochromatic Guernica, a modern history painting, and its power even today to disturb. Also touches on: The Dream, Boy Leading a Horse, Les Demoiselles D'Avignon, Portrait of Ambroise Vollard, Large Nude in a Red Armchair, some preliminary sketches for Guernica.
