Summary: Backed by the Catholic Church which was struggling to connect with the faithful in the face of rising Protestantism, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio painted images imbued with physical immediacy and in-your-face drama. As the program shows, there was a trade-off: according to Columbia University professor Simon Schama, Caravaggio's biblical scenes frequently eschew "any vision of consolation or redemption." Using a combination of dramatic reconstruction, photography, and Schama's narration, explores the artist's humble origins, penchant for violence, and spiritual complexity. Analyzes several major paintings, including The Calling of Saint Matthew, The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew, The Beheading of John the Baptist, and The Death of the Virgin Mary, with extensive commentary on David with the Head of Goliath.
