[The B.C. fisheries plan]

Summary: Westland is a program on sustainable development and land use in B.C. Program 3 discusses the five year strategic fisheries plan. First concern of the plan is to maintain wild fish stocks. The need for cooperative management of resources to sustain all uses is emphasized. Loch Long Storage Dam restoration project near Kelowna and removal of a log jam from the Salmon River on Vancouver Island are used as examples of fisheries restoration projects which used cooperative efforts of private corporations which donated equipment and time to enhance publicly owned fisheries habitat. Trout Creek in the Okanagan is used as an example of a collapsed fishery due to human competition for water. There is a long segment on the collapse of the Kokanee fishery due to Gerrard Rainbow Trout predation and lack of nutrients in Kootenay Lake. Also archival film footage on use of toxic chemicals to remove coarse fish from lakes so they could be restocked with "desirable" game fish and the present use of more benign Rotenone and management for biological diversity.
