This is a welcome new volume in the area of peace studies. Though less thorough, it picks up nicely in the tradition of Thomas Keefe and Ron E. Roberts's Realizing Peace, (1991) now out of print. Fisk and Schellenberg, faculty at Canada's Mount Saint Vincent University, have brought together an eclectic and knowledgeable group of Canadian and American authors. Conrad Brunk (Ch. 1) does a reasonably good introductory job of defining terms and explaining and justifying the peace studies field, although the discussion could have been more balanced with the field's weaknesses. Authors use helpful pedagogical tables to summarize the conclusions of various chapters, in turn dealing systematically with interpersonal conflict resolution (Keashly and Warters), international conflict resolution (Morrison), and nonviolence (Vellacott). This is a solid core, though each chapter could have been more theoretically and empirically complete. Nigel Young provides an unusual look at peace activism and peace movements (Ch. 5), while Larry Fisk talks about the emerging role of peace education. A fine feature is the epilogue, which allows the authors to comment on each other's work and raise supplementary points. Highly recommended for undergraduate libraries and classroom use.
