Canada Rocks provides a broad overview of Canada's geology--from the earliest rocks to postglacial times and from Canada's east to the west and to the north. Abundantly illustrated with photographs, geologic maps, and diagrammatic cross-sections, the book describes the geology and explains the geological history interpretations that have been made based on that geology. Following an introductory chapter, Eyles and Miall (both, Univ. of Toronto) review basic geologic concepts and the plate tectonic history of Canada over the past 4 billion years. Subsequent chapters focus on specific regions of Canada including the Shield area, Interior Platform, and the eastern, Arctic, and western areas. The authors also cover glacial geology, Canada's mineral resources, and environmental geology. In general, the book is well edited. However, in some chapters the illustrations are out of sync with the text, captions do not accompany all of the illustrations that are at the beginnings and ends of chapters, and a few errors were noted. The book makes extensive use of geologic terminology (a glossary is included) and is fairly detailed, requiring some geologic background to use the volume to its fullest extent. However, readers lacking geologic training will also be able to appreciate and use the book effectively. Summing Up: Recommended. All readers/libraries. Copyright 2008 American Library Association.
